Spam e-mail from geek-online.com If you have received an unsolicited e-mail which appears to have come from geek-online.com, please be aware that this spam did not actually orginate from our address. Someone is using geek-online.com as a spoofed source-address for the distribution of spam. Unfortunately, the hosts for geek-online say that there is nothing that they can do to prevent this. If the concept of e-mail spoofing is new to you, please read on for an explanation: E-mail spoofing is the forgery of an e-mail header so that the message appears to have originated from someone other than the actual source. Distributors of spam often use spoofing in order to avoid prosecution for their actions. E-mail spoofing is possible because Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), the main protocol used in sending e-mail, does not normally include an authentication mechanism. Anyone with the requisite knowledge can connect to a mail server and use it to send messages that appear to be from anyone, anywhere. Using this technique, someone is sending spoofed e-mail that appears to be from me. This spam consist mostly of attempts to inflate the values of penny-stocks, and should obviously be ignored. |
